Could TV be classified as a narcotic?

What else could make a person sit and stare for hours? From a very young age we are placed in front of the TV, to keep us quiet and docile while Mom does her chores. Take a couch potato camping and observe how they act.

What kind of studies have been done on this topic? I don't know where to place this topic, but Psychology, or Sociology seem like a natural fit.
